The 2009 Louisville Leopards Season in Review
In Measuring a Successful Season, You have to look at so many variables that go along with the Great Times as well as
Tough Breaks that come with the Game of Football.  The 2009 Louisville Leopards provided so many Great Moments and a
Fantastic Journey for our Leopard Faithful in posting another 10 and 0 Season which proved to be the 11th in School History!  You
may want to start with the Electric Night on Statewide Television that saw our Mighty Leps Dismantle North Canton Hoover with 5
TD Passes to 5 Different Receivers and a Goal Line Stand against the Reigning Mr. Football.  You may want to reference a
Comeback in Week 4 versus the Canton South Wildcats that saw our Mr. Football play his last High School
Football Game and showed what a True Champion looked like with a last minute drive that led to a Game
Winning Field Goal with Six Seconds remaining in the contest.  You can point to the 6 and 0 Carrollton
Warriors coming into The Ville and completely getting Dominated by our Leopard Defense and facing a
Smash Mouth Spread Rushing Attack.  In a Week 9 Showdown for the NBC Championship with the Marlington
Dukes, our Beloved Leps faced a Two Touchdown deficit early on and rebounded as Two Players that faced
Career Ending Injuries just a Year earlier led our Boys to an NBC Championship.  With an Associated Press
Poll Championship in site for only the Second Time in School History, our Louisville Leopards took care of
business with a Week 10 Victory over the Minerva Lions.  Finally, in the last game to be played in the Historic
Louisville Leopard Stadium, the 2009 Leopards played their Hearts Out and ended our Season with a 10 and 1 Record.  All in All,
Head Coach Paul Farrah, the Class of 2010, and our 2009 Louisville Leopards have so much to be Proud of.  Let’s now meet who
made this Fantastic Journey possible for our Leopard Faithful in 2009!
One thing you can say about Head Coach Paul Farrah and his Staff is that they are consistent in their Approach.  Defensive
Coordinator Nick Lewis leading the 5-3 Pressure Defense, and Offensive Coordinator John DeMarco attacking with the Spread
Offense that most of the NBC have adopted in recent seasons.  When you Talk about the 2009 Leopards, you have to start with our
Dominant Defense.  Defensive Coordinator Nick Lewis returned some Stand-Out Players and this Group did not Disappoint in
yielding only 94 Points in 11 Games and only 30 Points in the 2nd Half--—--------“Do That Math”!  Linebacker Coach Troy Davis led an
outstanding unit that was led by one of the Finest Middle Linebackers that has ever worn the Blue and White! NBC and All District
Player of the Year along with First-Team All-Ohio Stand-Out Senior Captain #24 Hunter Potts.  #24 Potts led our Defense with 102
Tackles and an Astonishing 23 Tackles For Loss.  #24 Potts flew to the Football for Two Straight Years at a Position the Coaches
were searching for Entering the 2008 Campaign.  One of the Best Leaders and Consistent Players for our Leopards wore number
#34 in Senior Captain Jake Adkins who added 63 Tackles and had a Huge 4th Quarter Interception in the Leopards 17-14 Comeback
Victory over Canton South in Week 4.  The other Outside Linebacker Position was manned by Junior #9 Michael Schooley who was
outstanding in recording 42 Tackles and 3 Interceptions.  Junior #33 Matt Dunnerstick contributed at Linebacker in a Big Win over
Carrollton for our Leps!  The next unit that was a part of the Dominant Front Eight was the Interior Defensive Line led by Coach
Mike “Horse” Norris.  Can you say 37 Tackles behind the Line of Scrimmage!  No, that is not a Misprint. Second Team All-Ohio
Senior #55 Joe Poyser set a School Record with 18 Sacks and added 19 more Tackles For Loss.  Poysssss was truly unblockable
all season long and if there was a Better Defensive Lineman in the State Of Ohio, please Show Me The Tape!  Lining Up Right
Beside Poys was the Unheralded Senior #51 Joe Henderson who returned in 2009 at Nose Guard and completely Plugged the
Middle for 11 Straight Games in taking on Double Teams and opening up opportunities for the Entire Front Eight.  At the Quick
Tackle Position, Senior Captain #50 Bobby Gothot moved into a Starting Role and recorded 5 Sacks while rotating with Senior #36
Billy Kennedy and Junior #61 Zac Whaley.  #50 Gothot had a Large Responsibility on Offense and #36 Billy Kennedy along with #61
Zac Whaley each recorded Sacks to assist Up Front on Defense! On the Outside of The Defensive Line, Coach Adam Burris utilized
all Resources in filling the Defensive End Position with both Young and Old!  Senior #49 Matt Wharmby settled in at the Defensive
End position and made My Play Of The Year with a Game Clinching Fumble Return for a Touchdown over the Marlington Dukes on
Senior Night for the Class of 2010!  Senior #14 Dan Zavarelli had a very nice Year contributing at Defensive End the entire year and
Senior #48 Justin Moulin also contributed at DE.  The other Defensive End position was controlled by Super Soph #16 Chad Neff
who recorded 8 Sacks which was second on our Leps Defense.  When #16 Neff moved to Offense, another Super Soph stepped in
as #81 Jake Sluss had 18 Tackles and 2 Sacks as our Leps were making their Playoff Run!  As I close out the Defense for our 2009
Leps, never forget the job the Defensive Backfield did in supporting the Front Eight that was so Dominating!  Can you imagine
losing Two Way Contributor Senior #23 Jordan McQuilkin in the first Scrimmage along with All-Ohio Cornerback #2 Bobby Swigert
after Two Weeks and still putting up Stellar Numbers.  If any of us have Forgotten, Let Me Remind You!  As a Three-Year Starter at
DB, #2 Bobby Swigert recorded 90 Tackles, 15 Knock Downs,  and 11 Interceptions along with a couple Defensive Touchdowns that
proved to be Game Changers even before the 2009 Season had begun.   Junior #44 Mitch Sluss started at Safety and was Fantastic
as the Fourth Leading Tackler for the Leopards with 53 on the Season and Roamed the Field Aggressively at one of the most
Important Positions on the Leopards Defense.  Senior #31 Kyle DeHoff started at Cornerback and Battled every down with a
consistent performance.   Junior #15 Jeremy White started at the other Cornerback and showed great Athleticism in recording a
Team Leading 5 Interceptions and 6 Knock Downs in the Defensive Backfield.  Another Super Sophomore who was a Major
Contributor especially late in the Year during our Playoff Push was #83 Adam Nees who has Tremendous Upside.   Also, As I talk
about our Leps Defense, I never want to forget Defensive End #56 Stephen Ellenberger and his Family
who we always have in our Thoughts and Prayers.  Love Ya #56! This Wraps Up Our Mighty Leps “D”
that did not give up over Two Touchdowns in any Game and Held our Playoff Opponent Columbus
Marion-Franklin to One Scoring Drive after Averaging 38 Points Per Game On The Season!
WELL DONE EYE-BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, let’s move to our Special Teams Unit for the 2009 Leopards!  Coach Mike Norris along with
Head Coach Paul Farrah put together a Great Mix of Seniors and Underclassmen that showed
tremendous Week To Week consistency.  When you talk Special Teams, you have to start with Kicking
Coach Dustin Nicholas and Stand-Out Kicker Junior #87 Jaron Lohmeyer.  #87 Lohmeyer was 28 of 33 on
Point After Attempts along with 8 of 10 on Field Goal Attempts for the Season.  Out of the hold of Junior
#13 Toby Minster and the Snap of #50 Bobby Gothot, #87 Jaron Lohmeyer nailed a Week 4--- 38 Yard
Game Winning Field Goal Along with a School Record 43 Yard Field Goal in a Week 5 Victory Over Northwest.  The Boys Up Front
did a Good Job Blocking, which was led by Senior #77 Bobby Marquardt.  The Punting Duties were handled by #2 Bobby Swigert
and #6 Logan Henkel early in the year then All-Ohio Linebacker #24 Hunter Potts settled into that role the remainder of the Season
and showed his Running Skills in Week 8 versus Alliance.  Senior #36 Billy Kennedy handled the Snaps with Gunners #21 Jared
Strasser and #31 Kyle DeHoff doing a great job the entire Year!  The Kickoff Team was led by Seniors #48 Justin Moulin, #14 Dan
Zavarelli, #36 Billy Kennedy, #21 Jared Strasser, #31 Kyle DeHoff, #5 Joe Stoffer along with Underclassmen #33 Matt Dunnerstick,
#7 Lucas Poyser, and #81 Jake Sluss which recorded several Fumble Recoveries from the Great Placement of Kicker #6 Logan
Henkel.  #87 Jaron Lohmeyer also played a Major Role in Booming Kickoffs for our Leps during our Playoff Run. The Kickoff Return
Team was led by Seniors #18 Tyler Barnes, #27 Michael Brown, #62 Nick Case and the Return Duties were handled by #44 Mitch
Sluss, #5 Joe Stoffer, and #15 Jeremy White.  #44 Sluss led all returners with a 27.1 Yard average on 10 Returns in 2009 with his
long being a 67 Yard Return.  The Punt Return Team was led by Junior #47 Christian Duckworth and Senior #18 Tyler Barnes as #5
Joe Stoffer along with #44 Mitch Sluss handled the Return Duties.  #5 Stoffer led the Leps with 24 Punt Returns for 159 Yards with
his Long being 44 Yards in a Week 8 Victory Over the Alliance Aviators.  Both the Kickoff and Punt Return Teams ended the 2009
Campaign without a Fumble, and Let’s never Forget our Mighty Leps were missing All-Ohio Performer #2 Bobby Swigert who
registered 748 Kickoff Return Yards and 402 Punt Return Yards for his Stellar Career!  Well Done Special Team Units!
Before I move to the Offense, there are few more Members of the 2009 Leopards that have to be Recognized!  Trainer Lance Sermon
was again excellent with his handling of the Walking Wounded in the Entire 2009 Season!  Senior Contributor Tyler Burk was an
absolute Mainstay with this Class of 2010 and played a Major Role in our 2009 Success.  Love Ya TB!!!  Our Senior Water Girls
which includes Danni Whaley,  Christine Farnum, and Lauren Groves all did an Outstanding Job for the last couple of years.  My old
Ball Coach(GO COLTS!-’82 CHAMPS) Greg Beatty who charted Plays for the Leps and I reference as our Quality Control Coach!
Thanks to Shelly Baumgardner and our Fine Cheerleaders led by Senior Alax Meyers along with Karen Long and “The Pride Of
Louisville” The Louisville Band!  And In Rapid Fire Mode, Opening Day Landscape—The Field Was Awesome, Mike and Sue Case,
The TD Club, Booster Club, Stadium Committee, Our Fine Statisticians, Team Dentists—Mike and Julie Thomas, Team
Doctor—Martin Vaught, and the School Administration.  Oh Yah----If I Forgot Someone---Which I Always Do!—Love Ya All and Love
Ya Leps!
Let’s move to our 2009 Leopard Offense!  It is kind of hard to believe that when you outscore your Opponents 294 to 94 that
you could be outscored 27 to 21 in the First Quarter but It Happened! So, it would be safe to say that our Leps Offense would get a
Feel for our Opponent in the First Quarter.  Offensive Coordinator John DeMarco led a unit that wore many different faces
throughout the 2009 Campaign!  I personally want to start with the Boys Up Front led by Offensive Line Coach Dan Radalia.  Coach
Radalia had a rare occurrence where he had Five Senior Starters with 2 Returners which included Second Team All-Ohio Recipient
#73 Joe Neff at Left Tackle and Senior Captain #50 Bobby Gothot at Center.  #65 Dan Davis at Right Tackle, #78 Tyler Radalia at Left
Guard, and #59 Dan McDonald rounded out the Starting Unit at Right Guard.  “Neffer”, GOT!HOT!, DD, T-RAD, and “Big Mac” did an
outstanding job Week In and Week Out adjusting to the Game Plan that included Games where our Leps would throw almost 40
Times and Weeks where our Boys would rush 60 Times.  Personally, one of My Plays of the Year is when #59 Dan “Big Mac”
McDonald chased down a Canton South Defender that proved to be the Game Saving Tackle in our Week 4 Last Second Victory!
Senior Center #62 Nick Case was a Major Contributor all Season Up Front along with Senior Guard #77 Bobby Marquardt and Junior
Tackle #60 John Taggart!  Well Done Boys, Now Let’s See Who You Blocked For!  Coach John DeMarco had very High Expectations
at the QB Position as Senior #2 Bobby Swigert was settling into the position after Playing WR for the Past Two Seasons.  Twoooooo
did not disappoint as through 4 Games with 2 Games playing on One Foot, #2 Swigert threw for almost 800 Yards and 7
Touchdowns.  After Week 4, Coach DeMarco turned to Junior #13 Toby Minster and #16 Chad Neff at the QB Position.  #13 Minster
was our Passer as Minster completed 41 of 93 Passes for 5 Touchdowns on the Season.  #13 Minster was instrumental in our Week
4 Victory when he lofted a Perfect TD Pass along the Right Sideline for our First Score.  Our Version of Tim Tebow was
Super Soph #16 Chad Neff who saw his first action Week 6 and never looked back!  #16 Neff rushed for 664 Yards
and averaged 111 yards per Game with 10 Rushing Touchdowns after moving from his starting Defensive End
position.  Speaking of Rushing,  Leopard Legend and Running Back Coach Brian Beatty led a Host of
Underclassmen in our Patented Spread Offense.  The Rushing Attack was led by the Emergence of Super Stud
Sophomore #7 Lucas Poyser who Grinded out 170 Attempts for 875 Yards and 9 Touchdowns as #7 Poyser loved
to turn the Corner on the left side of the Field. #7 Poys wore Big Brother’s Number and Ran like another Big
Brother #34!  Maybe Next Year He may even want to Hit like the Fourth Poys Boys #55 "ManChild" Joe!  Juniors
#44 Mitch Sluss and #32 Preston Massey along with Seniors #34 Jake Adkins and #27 Michael Brown also
contributed at the Running Back position for the Leps in 2009.  The Last Unit but not least to discuss is Our
Receiving Core that had Lost all 4 Starters from the 2008 Regional Finalist Louisville Team.  The only returning
Receiver with Varsity Experience was #5 Joe Stoffer who had 7 Catches in 2008 and of course #2 Bobby Swigert who entered 2009
with 84 Catches and over 1,000 Yards Receiving, but #2 was moving to the Quarterback position.  Also, Senior #23 Jordan
McQuilkin would have been a Big Contributor at the Slot Receiver, but was lost for the Season due to injury as stated earlier. Love
Ya McQ and Love Ya Two!  With Coach John DeMarco looking for some new Weapons, Senior #5 Joe Stoffer emerged as our Go-To
Receiver catching an even 50 Passes in 2009 with 2 TD’s and 2 2Pt. Conversions(Don’t Count As Catches, But I Think It
Should—So, I Did!) Senior #25 Cody Stocker had a Fabulous Year at the “X” Receiver with 26
Receptions and a Team Leading 6 Touchdowns with Big Scores in Week 10 and Week 11 for our Leps!
The other “X” Receiver was shared by Junior Two-Way Stand-Outs #15 Jeremy White with 17 Catches
and 2 TD’s and  #9 Michael Schooley who recorded 13 Catches and a Big TD in the Hoover Game.
These Two Juniors will be Fun to Watch next year!  Go Leps!  The other Slot Receiver was manned by
Two Seniors, #22 Lee Ferguson who added 9 Catches and a TD along with #21 Jared Strasser with 6
Catches and a Huge Game Changing First TD Catch in our Week 2 Victory over North Canton Hoover!
Seniors #29 Josh Wolfe, #18 Tyler Barnes, and #48 Justin Moulin all saw Varsity Time at Wide Receiver
for our 2009 Leps!  This wraps up the Leopards “O” and a successful Offense that executed many
different Game Plans in our Eleven Week Season in 2009!
Well, it is time to wrap up the 2009 Louisville Leopard Season.  It was Extra Special for Me
Personally as a Fan--- following The Class of 2010 and as a Parent—Love Ya FIVE!!!!!  Best of Luck to
The Class of 2010 in All That You Set Out To Do In Life!  Thanks For Some Fabulous Life Long
Memories!  You Have Definitely Left Your Leopard Legacy For Years To Come!  Leopard Nation ’09! Back To CHAMPS!
I cannot wait to see the 2010 Leopards Play Some Football In Our New State Of The Art Stadium!  So, 2010 Louisville
Leopards—Control What You Can Control And GET TO WORK!
Love Ya Leps!
